Sing Warwick! 2017

A Workshop for Singers and Instrumentalists
Exploring Recent Discoveries
of 18th - 19th century church music from the
Warwickshire County Record Office

Saturday 11th February 2017
application form

The Workshop will be led by

Immanuel’s Ground

Warwick's West Gallery Quire

and held in
The Church of St Nicholas,
St Nicholas Church Street,
Warwick,
CV34 4JD

Amongst the Warwickshire County Record Office collections there are four Quire Books, part printed, part manuscript, which contain music from the north-eastern part of Warwickshire and its adjoining counties of Northamptonshire and Leicestershire.  Much of this music, written for Country Church Quires, has never seen the light of day since the end of the 18th Century, and this day-long workshop will explore psalms, anthems and carols sung in our local churches, including St Nicholas', Warwick, who once owned these Quire Books.

This will include pieces from two rare books found bound within these quire books, one being by William Beasley of Brinklow, and the other by Michael Dobney, born in Leicester but who led a colourful life as Music-Master of the Northampton Militia, and probably also sometime as a Dancing Master, and who lived at various times at Daventry and Welton, Northants., and at Southam, Warwickshire.

The Workshop will run from 10.30 am until 4.30 pm, and light refreshments will be available during the day.  At lunchtime there are several eating places nearby, or you can bring lunch to eat in the church. A book of music will be provided, and it would be appreciated to know well in advance what instruments to expect.

As to instruments, we try to keep within the bounds set by historical records, namely strings and woodwind (including serpents, curtals and light brass etc., but not heavy Eb instruments which tend to overpower the others!)

As to singers, all are very welcome whatever age or ability; much of the music can be learned by ear, although of course the ability to read music is an advantage.

We hope that some of you may be interested in learning more of what we do as a Quire. We practice most Wednesday evenings at
Northgate Church, or Hall, 8pm to about 10 pm.

  from
10:30 am   to   4:30 pm
Cost: £10.00 to include music and light refreshments.
Any profits from this day will go to WCRO
to help with
the conservation work
.

DIRECTIONS TO GET THERE

St Nicholas’ Church is on the south-east side of Warwick, and for travellers by car the postcode of the nearby car park is is CV34 4QY. Approaching from Junction 13 on the M40, access is from the south only. Access from the north is by way of Junction 14 on the M40; both junctions lead to a four-way roundabout using the A452.

At this roundabout, from the north take the first exit, and from the south the second exit, onto the A 425 – also called the Banbury Road – towards Warwick. Go straight ahead at the next traffic lights, past Warwick school playing fields, over the next roundabout, and over the river bridge (river Avon).  Straight away get in the right hand lane and take the next turn RIGHT immediately before the light controlled pedestrian crossing. This takes you into St Nicholas’ Park and its Leisure Centre, where can be found a large pay and display car park. Payment with coins only, 6 hrs and over is £4.50.

Free parking is not easy to find in Warwick, so you are recommended to stay in the park.  The church, with its tall spire, is on your left as you enter. A short footpath accessible from the right hand corner of the car park, as you face the church, leads to the entrance under the spire.

By train, please contact us if you need transport from Warwick railway station - Chiltern Railways - Marylebone to Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon line, which also now links to Oxford.

See the Trainline website for times, etc, at https://www.thetrainline.com/stations/warwick

We look forward to seeing you there!
