~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As part of the
Lichfield Heritage Weekend's Georgian Festival 2016,
Immanuel's Ground will be singing during the
morning at
Wade Street Church
[post code
WS13 6HL]
at 11.00 am, and again at 12.00
noon, for the benefit of
those visiting the Church.
At 2.00 pm the Quire will be leading a
Gallery Workshop
for Singers and Instrumentalists
in the Hall adjoining the
Church, to which everyone is welcome. The music will include
hymns and metrical psalms from the period roughly 1740 to 1840,
of the sort which predated the production of hymn books such as
Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1851.
This hymn book imposed rigorous Victorian harmonies on the
newly surpliced choirs formed by followers of the Oxford
Movement, and thus helped to sweep away almost all the
earlier church music, and the quires themselves, which were so
characteristic of what we now call the West Gallery
period.
Immanuel's Ground
specialise in finding and revisiting
the joyous harmonies of this forgotten era of church and
chapel music, accompanied by the sort of instruments which
replaced the organs destroyed by the Commonwealth, and written
about
by Thomas Hardy in his novels of Georgian times, such as
Under the Greenwood Tree.
Music will be provided, the cost being approximately £2.
