Life in recession-hit 21st century Britain might be tough, but the reign of George III saw hardships of an altogether darker complexion. With the country almost constantly at war, hunger and the threat of invasion was part and parcel of everyday life for the common man. Meanwhile, in the over-taxed colonies of New England, other trouble was brewing, and it wasn’t just tea ...

Let Immanuel’s Ground take you on a musical journey to Georgian times, with plenty of opportunity for audience participation.

Harvest Festival Evensong

Lichfield, Staffordshire
Saturday 17th September
11.00 am - 4.00 pm
West Gallery returns to Lichfield
Wade Street Church, Lichfield

As part of the Lichfield Heritage Weekend's Georgian Festival 2016,
Immanuel's Ground will be singing during the morning at the Wade Street Church, both at 11.00 am, and again at 12.00 noon, for the benefit of those visiting the Church.

At 2.00 pm that afternoon the Quire will be leading a Workshop for Singers and Instrumentalists in the Hall adjoining the Church, to which everyone is welcome. The music will include hymns and metrical psalms from the period roughly 1740 to 1840, of the sort which predated the production of hymn books such as Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1851.

This hymn book imposed rigorous Victorian harmonies on the newly surpliced choirs formed by followers of the Oxford Movement, and thus helped to sweep away almost all the earlier church music, and the quires themselves, which was so characteristic of what we now call the West Gallery period.

Immanuel's Ground specialise in finding and revisiting the joyous harmonies of this forgotten era of church and chapel music, accompanied by the sort of instruments which replaced the organs destroyed by the Commonwealth, and written about by Thomas Hardy in his novels of Georgian times, such as Under the Greenwood Tree.

Music will be provided, the cost being approximately £2. To help with preparing the music booklets, please contact the Wade Street Church Office (Tel: 01543 253003) to confirm numbers, and also what instruments you will be bringing.

Sing Birmingham! 2023
St Nicolas' Church, Kings Norton, Birmingham
81 The Green, Kings Norton, Birmingham, West Midlands B38 8RU
A day of west gallery music and carols for singers and instrumentalists starting at 10.00 am and using the beautiful, warm, historic church of St Nicolas.

This is the eighth of our biennial workshops in and around Birmingham, which attract people from many places, both far and wide. Music is taken from locally sourced books and manuscripts as well as 'west gallery favourites', and is music which has become part of a repertoire common to modern west gallery quires and bands.

Use this link to get directions from where you live to St Nicolas' Church.

Cost £10.00 p/p to include music and light
refreshments.
